Carbon Literacy certification for Orb Rope Access Director, Julie Lavery

We’re delighted to announce that Director, Julie Lavery, is now certified as Carbon Literate after completing an approved course with the Carbon Literacy Project via the Heritage Trust Network.

What is Carbon Literacy?

Carbon Literacy is climate change learning that leads to a proactive and positive approach to reducing carbon emissions. It provides learners with an understanding of the affects of climate change and the tools to lower their own carbon footprint and that of people close to them.

The Carbon Literacy Project describes Carbon Literacy as, “An awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions on an individual, community and organisational basis”.

A key goal of the certification is that learners will share the knowledge they have gained with colleagues, associates, family and friends to inspire widespread change.

Why is Carbon Literacy important to Orb Rope Access?

Orb Rope Access provide rope access maintenance services to the construction sector. Around 40% of carbon emissions come from the construction, operation or maintenance of buildings, so we’re involved in a sector that must be proactive when it comes to climate change.

Our increasing amount of work on heritage buildings has also highlighted the need for preventative measures against climate change that causes the likes of water ingress, the growth of algae and moss and the thermal stress of hotter and drier summers to protect heritage sites.

It is important for our clients that we understand their challenges around the carbon emissions that cause climate change. We want to share what we learn by proactively offering guidance about the most environmentally friendly way to approach a project and achieve sustainable outcomes.

We also, quite simply, want to do our bit to slow down climate change! Orb Rope Access is a family business. We believe it is incumbent on us to provide a more healthy environment for future generations.

Of the Carbon Literacy certification, Julie said: “We take our responsibilities for reducing carbon emissions very seriously. Becoming Carbon Literate enables me to share my learning with our team and our clients, and helps us to make sustainable decisions across all aspects of the business, not just on our projects.

“The course was really interesting and insightful. It can be completed by individuals and organisations so I’d highly recommend it to anybody who feels compelled to do more to reduce carbon emissions.”
