The brief

Orb Rope Access was appointed by Layer Survey to provide essential high risk rescue cover for a project in Gorton. The scope involved protecting confined space entrants who were required to work inside a hazardous underground area. The primary objective was to ensure the safety of the survey team in an environment with significant risks.

The site

The work took place in an isolated underground location which presented specific environmental dangers. The space was classified as high risk due to the potential for flooding and the presence of harmful gases. These conditions meant that standard safety measures were insufficient, requiring a specialist rescue team to be on standby throughout the operation.

The work

Success in such a volatile environment relies on preparation. Our team engaged in extensive planning and provision reviews with the client before the work began to ensure all safety protocols were robust.

Once on site, communication proved to be the most vital element of the operation. We established a constant line of communication with the confined space entrants, monitoring their status continuously. We also implemented strict turnaround times and had comprehensive rescue measures in place, ready for immediate deployment if the conditions deteriorated.

The entrants performed a great job under difficult conditions, supported by the assurance that a professional rescue team was watching over them. For what could have been a very difficult confined space project the presence of Orb's confined space rescue team aided our works massively. With the prior planning completed the job ran smoothly and although they were not called in to action just by having them with us on site our team had the additional confidence to complete their works in the knowledge that the experience of Orb's operatives could be called upon should any issues arise.
